Sometimes the router suddenly freezes when trying to connect to the router’s setup page. The wireless connection keeps on dropping too. These are just a couple of problems i have encountered on Edimax BR-6204WLg wireless router, to fix this you have to upgrade your firmware. The default firmware installed on this router is version 1.08, the fix is to upgrade it to firmware version 1.11. Follow the guide below on how to upgrade the BR-6204WLg router firmware.
1. Login to your setup page default url is http://192.168.1.1, default username is admin and password is 1234.
2. Click on tools icon, then tick the upgrade firmware box and click next.
3. Download the firmware from the url below and save it to your hard drive, decompress it.
http://www.edimax.com/images/Image/Firmware/Wireless/Router/BR-6204WLg/edimax-6204Wlg-upg-1.11.zip
4. Click on browse and select the decompressed firmware file, edimax-6204Wlg-upg-1.11.bin
5. Now click upgrade, when the uploading is finished and the router has completed the upgrade, get a pin and press the reset button using the pin.
Congratulation’s! Your router should be running on firmware version 1.11 by now, which you can verify by logging in to the router’s setup page.

Ryan @ 8:18 pm:
I already upgraded the firmware to v1.11 and I still encounter problems such as websites not opening up.
If I directly connect the Smartbro cable to my computer, I don’t encounter the problem. Could it be the Edimax BR-6204WLg router I bought 2 months ago is defective?
Dino @ 1:09 am:
Ryan,
It can be the dns servers used by your router, i used 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1, you can also set this on the computer that you’re using.
you can check what dns servers you’re using through ipconfig/all command at the command prompt.
Angelo @ 4:41 am:
It says “not compatible file”. what should I do next?
Batman @ 6:26 pm:
Angelo,
decompress the file first so you will have the .bin file and upload it to your router.
Noel @ 12:06 pm:

Good day. I’m also experiencing problems with my router similar to Ryan’s.
Sir Dino, we would appreciate it much if you would elaborate more about the “DNS Servers” thingy.
Karlo Paolo @ 4:45 am:
hey I have encountered this problem and this forum helped me fix the problem..thanks dude..:))
Gihan @ 3:35 am:
I had the same problem. I bought this router from MSY and the router had connectivity issues even the lan ports did not work well. the firmware update solved the problem. My router was configured to obtain DNS automaticaly. if you need to set a DNS, login to your router (mentioned below), select general setup -> WAN -> set DNS Manually and type the DNS you wish.
To flash the router:
download the firmware version 1.08 Hun mentioned ( http://www.edimax.com/images/Image/Firmware/Wireless/Router/BR-6204WLg/edimax-6204Wlg-upg-1.08.zip ) and save it on your desktop. open the zip file and extract the bin file (edimax-6204Wlg-upg-1.08) to your desktop.
open your web browser and type: 192.168.2.1 on t he address bar and login to your router using ‘admin’ as username and ‘1234′ as password.
goto ‘tools’ section on home page and select ‘upgrade firmware’ and press the ‘next’ button.
on the next page browse the ‘bin’ file you saved on your desktop and press ‘upload’ button to start the flashing process.
you will see a progressbar on screen. do not close the web browser or disconnect the power from the router. the flashing will be over within a minute or two.
the router will restart and wait a minute or two for it to come online. now you will see a super efficient router loading web pages in seconds.
cheers everyone…

blinker @ 5:20 am:
question. when i upgrade my router to 1.11 i can’t access my default gateway.. it keeps on saying that connection was reset. though i can connect to different website.
Martz @ 10:13 am:
hello there! My router’s power light is always blinking and as a result, I always have an intermittent connectivity since the connection is always dropping because of my router. First I tried the hard reset which they called 30/30/30 reset and nothings happen. I’ve done all the steps, from the default firmware which is v 1.08 to v1.11 and back to v1.08 again. I even tried to change the dns setting to manual and still the problem occurs. I put it back to automatic dns and went back to v1.08 and the problem is still there. Maybe my router is already defective.
by the way, my isp is also smartbro and I have a ip phone. I tried to disconnect the phone still theres a problem. The only time that I don’t experience the issue is when my Connection is plug to my computer directly(router isolated).

Hasab Burgonya @ 6:33 am:
Hi!
I had the same problem with this router (connecting & wifi problems).
Thanks Noel for the solution: downgrade firmware to 1.08.
It looks like the fw version 1.11 sux!
But I still have some issues with the wifi access, sometimes I can connect to the internet, sometimes can’t.
Could WPA/WPA2 be the problem?
rthh @ 5:04 pm:
I bought that router with firmware v.1.08 experiencing these problems mentioned here. I upgraded to 1.11 but problem with connectivity remains. I have PC connected by Ethernet cable to router LAN port and also two additional PCs connected via Wi-Fi. Connection via Ethernet cable doesn’t freeze. Problem is only via wireless connection. Sometimes one pc looses connection and the other doesn’t, sometimes both of them. I solve this problem by restarting router (unplugging its power), but it is starting to bother me.

Hello. I have already set up my Edimax BR-6204Wg router and my connection is smartbro, for quiet sometime, it is working perfectly fine. My problem now is many of the people in the neighborhood is connecting to my wifi since it has no password, im just using “default”. Can you please teach me the step by step on how to configure/put a password to my router? I’ve been trying so hard to google for some instructions, but to no avail. Im not a computer wizzard by the way, it would be of great help if you could email me and guide me the steps on how to setup a password. Thank you so much
