This is a straight-forward guide on installing dd-wrt firmware to a Linksys WRT54GL router.

Before you start the upgrade, make sure that you have a stable power source to prevent unexpected interruption that may cause problem to the router.

1. Download the latest dd-wrt firmware from dd-wrt website.

2. Login to your Linksys WRT54GL router and go to administration->Firmware Upgrade->Click Browse and locate the dd-wrt firmware binary file and click Upgrade button.

3. The upgrading should start immediately, when the upgrade is done you should see an upgrade success message. Click continue.

4. Secure a pen and use it to hold down the router’s reset button for 30 seconds and release the button. LEDs should start blinking for 15 seconds.

5. When the router is fully initialized, open your browser and point it to http://192.168.1.1 and login using “root” as the username and “admin” as the password, all without the quotes.

Router Basic Security

1. Change the router’s default password.

2. Set the router’s wireless network encryption type and key

3. Use https for access.
